South East Technological University (SETU) stands for respectful and peaceful co-existence and a world free of terror and violence.
SETU wishes to express abhorrence of the large-scale civilian casualties and deaths resulting from the ongoing war in Gaza and the appalling terrorist attacks by Hamas on October 7th that preceded it.
The distressing stories and images coming from the conflict in Gaza have impacted us all. Our stance in SETU is based on humanitarian principles and we believe that every effort should be made for an immediate peaceful resolution to the conflict.
SETU fully supports the call of the Irish Government for an immediate, permanent ceasefire, for unfettered access to humanitarian aid, for the release of hostages, and the equal protection of human rights in Palestine and Israel.
As an educational institution ourselves, we particularly condemn the destruction of universities and educational facilities in Gaza as it not only denies individuals of their right to education and a bright future, but it also deprives society of the educated people needed to meet its future challenges.
Regarding international relations we can confirm that:
• SETU does not have any Erasmus exchange arrangements with Israeli universities.
• The University does not currently have any collaborative research funding.
• A small number of SETU’s students are from Israel and Palestine.
As a university, SETU promotes a culture of inclusion and safety for all. In solidarity with those affected, SETU is working to provide tangible support. This year, SETU became a University of Sanctuary, demonstrating our commitment to peace and human rights through key initiatives and supports.
SETU offers eight Sanctuary Scholarships each year and has been working over the past few months to directly assist a student to leave Gaza and come to study at SETU, and we will continue our efforts to assist students in dire need going forward.
We aim to be a university that respects varied histories, voices, and views while exemplifying how diverse and different perspectives can coexist peacefully and constructively. We are creating spaces where we can engage in dialogue and understanding of the complexities of this situation.
As a multicultural and diverse community where a wide range of views coexist and academic freedom and freedom of speech are respected, it is essential that these views continue to be expressed respectfully so that everyone can fully and positively engage in life at SETU.
