Below are some of the most common questions asked which may be helpful in assisting you with your query.

This is the same username and password that you use for logging into Moodle and computers in SETU.

Registered students exam timetables for each semester and Autumn examinations are posted here. Timetables for Semester 1 examinations are usually available in early December, Semester 2 timetables in early April and Autumn timetables in early August.  It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they are aware of their examination timetable.

Registered candidate can find their examination seat number when they login to their exam timetable (see 2 above).

Deferral of subject(s) - a deferral is gained if you have mitigating circumstances or extenuating circumstances - it means you will need to sit the exam in the next available exam session.  You do not need to enter for this exam or pay for it, it is automatically downloaded for you.  Please check the website for your examination timetable when available.

COMPENSATION

Students do not apply for compensation, compensation is automatically granted by the Course Board if applicable.

A candidate who fails to attain the required pass standard in some modules in an examination, may, nevertheless, pass the overall examination by compensation, within the limits set out below.

  • Major Awards: Candidates may only compensate where the total credit value for which compensation is sought does not exceed 10 credits in any one semester. In practice, therefore, a candidate may seek to compensate in one 10 credit module or two 5 credit modules. The maximum number of modules passed by compensation between semester 1 and 2 examinations is four—that is, no more than two 5 credits modules in semester 1 and no more than two 5 credit modules in semester 2.
  • Special Purpose, Minor and Supplemental Awards: Compensation is only permissible in special purpose, minor and supplemental awards of 30 credits or more per stage. Candidates may not compensate more the one third of the total credits of the stage. Compensation is at the discretion of the Programme Board and the compensation rules must be specified on the relevant Approved Programme Schedule. If the compensation details are not specified on the Approved Programme Schedule then no compensation is permissible.
  • Only performance at the first attempt in modules in a given stage (of at least 30 credits) may be used to compensate in the same stage, provided no module in the stage has been failed outright.
  • The marks obtained in the examination module(s) listed on the Programme Schedule being considered for compensation must not be lower than 35%, where the pass standard is 40%.
  • Aggregate excess gross marks above the pass standard obtained in examination modules which have been passed must be at least double the weighted deficiency in the examination module(s) being considered for compensation. Where 10 credit modules are involved the marks must be weighted to reflect the number of credits.
  • Compensation can only apply where all the examination modules appropriate to a stage are presented at the same sitting; e.g., a candidate who has been granted exemptions at a previous examination, and is presenting in the remaining examination modules, may not pass the repeat examinations by compensation. Compensation may apply in circumstances where the candidate is repeating an entire stage and repeating all modules on that stage.
  • Compensation may be applied only to enable a candidate to pass in the examination as a whole. It may not be applied to grant exemptions or additional exemptions.
  • There will be no compensation between semesters. However, this regulation should be waived in the case of first year students, provided all other conditions pertaining to compensation are satisfied, namely that:
  1. the student requires compensation for modules totalling no more than 20 credits;
  2. the marks obtained in the module(s) being considered for compensation must not be lower than 35%;
  3. aggregate excess gross marks above the pass standard obtained in passing modules must be at least double the weighted deficiency in the module(s) being considered for compensation.

Progression

  • As SETU recruits full-time learners on the basis of a full academic year, no hindrance will be placed on a full-time learner moving from the first to the second semester in a stage.
  • Full-time students may progress to the next stage of a programme without having passed all modules in previous stages provided (a) they meet any pre-requisite requirements and (b) the modules carried amount to no more than 10 credits. The student is a repeat learner for the carried module(s). Students who progress in this manner may not be afforded the opportunity to repeat failed modules at the next examination sitting, due to timetabling constraints. Students are expected to sit repeat exams at the next available opportunity.
  • A student is not permitted to progress in this way from one programme to a follow-on programme.

Repeat Assessment

SETU normally permits candidates who have failed a module to re-take the examination or assessment in that module. Candidates normally may take three repeat opportunities (candidates are permitted four consecutive opportunities to take examinations) before being required to seek, in writing, permission from the Registrar to take further attempts. Exceptions to this rule must be specified in the Approved Programme Schedule

Failing assessments or exams in Semester 1 does not prevent you from progressing into semester 2.  Progression rules outlined in question 12 advises on progression between years.

Students wishing to enter and repeat modules from previous academic years may do so. The charge is €200 per 5 credit module. On-line payment is made using a valid Debit Card or Credit Card. Students from the School of Education and Lifelong Learning should contact [email protected] or 051-302040 for information regarding carried modules for which they were not registered for in the current year and wish to repeat.

This means that you have been permitted to the next year of your course. If you are overall Pass with no outstanding modules you may complete your registration online in late-August (date to be confirmed).  If you have not passed all modules, but are still allowed to progress, you will need to complete the outstanding modules before completion of your course.

Students wishing to enter and repeat modules from previous academic years may do so. The charge is €200 per 5 credit module.  On-line payment is made using a valid Debit Card or Credit Card.

Parchment is an online platform that provides: 

  • An easy-to-use dashboard that allows 24/7 access to your certified digital SETU documents such as your statement of exam results and European Diploma Supplement documents.
  • A sharing functionality whereby you can now share a link to your SETU documents with prospective employers, educational establishments, or visa authorities. 
  • The ability to connect your Parchment account with your Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google accounts to login with any of those platforms. 
  • A high document quality whereby you can view SETU documents in high definition exactly as it appears on paper. 

For examination results that have gone through the summer examination boards we will commence the uploading of examination letters to Parchment from the 21st of June. Results that are going through the autumn examination boards we will commence the uploading of examinations letters to Parchment in late September. These will be issued over a number of weeks. Students will need to use the Parchment online portal to gain access to this letter. A further email with instructions on how to do this will be sent to you once your letter has been uploaded.

Annually, entry for the repeat Autumn exam session opens online in mid-June and closes in late June. You must use the online link once available to register.  Students will not receive an online exam timetable if they do not register during this period.

  1. Solas apprentice students will receive their Exam Result Letter from their ETB by post.
  2. Once you get this, please e-mail the Examinations Office at [email protected] (from your SETU student e-mail account if you are a previous SETU student) to request details on next steps.
  3. Once the Exams Office have received confirmation from Solas that you are eligible to repeat, you will get an e-mail requesting that you photograph/scan and return by e-mail a copy of your ETB Exam Result Letter to the Waterford Examinations Office at [email protected]. This is to confirm the details of the exam you are sitting, the number of attempts made, and which call this is for you, as provided to you by Solas. This is not issued to the university, which is why you must supply a copy. 
  4. From here, you will be sent details of the login portal to register.
  5. For craft apprentices only, the repeat fee is €150 for all modules, regardless of number of modules and the time of sitting. * Please Note: The repeat fees are subject to review on an annual basis. On
