English is available at SETU as part of the Joint Honours Degree Bachelor of Arts (Honours) [SE200] and as a Minor element on the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology.
Students of English study drama, fiction and poetry in English from Ireland and across the world, and core modules will introduce you to a wide variety of writing from the 1500s to the present day. Additionally, you will be introduced to literary criticism, and encouraged to develop a keen aesthetic, critical and social appreciation of literature in a variety of forms. In implicit and explicit ways, you will be invited to reflect on the value of literature in shaping our local and national identities, and in confronting and processing key political and social challenges.
English modules also embed key skills in critical thinking, writing, research and presentations into the programme. These skills enhance our graduates’ ability to be task-focused, flexible and creative, qualities which are very appealing to employers.
The study of English works very well for students who are also taking subjects such as Psychology, Languages, Religious Studies, Sociology and Theatre Studies. The strong emphasis on the mix of subjects and disciplines is unique in courses of this type in Ireland. In taking English in the South‐east, students have an opportunity to study literature in a context that is very different to that of their peers in other cities in Ireland. The strong literary and dramatic traditions of Waterford and the surrounding region that have produced writers like Molly Keane, John Banville and Teresa Deevy are reflected on in this course.
English graduates gain leading roles in intellectual, professional and public life. The skills developed by students of English are in high demand from employers, especially in journalism, broadcasting, teaching, advertising, marketing and business, arts management, publishing, law and diplomacy.
