Psychology is now available to study on the Joint Honours Arts Degree SE200.

Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes.  As a broad discipline, psychologists use rigorous scientific methods to examine a wide range of topics to examine behaviour, emotions, attitudes, and cognitions. As such, psychological knowledge is applied to a wide variety of contexts such as the legal, social, healthcare systems and industry,

Psychology on BA (Hons)[SE200] provides students with a general introduction to the core areas of Psychology including: social, developmental, personality, biological and cognitive psychology, as well as research methods.

Psychology on Arts is a great supplement to any academic plan if you would like to understand people better and how to conduct scientific research, given that human interaction is a huge part of almost all careers, studying psychology enhances our understanding of both ourselves and others.

Please note that the psychology element on SE200 is not accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland. Students who wish to move on to further training to become a professional psychologist must complete a conversion degree in order to meet the PSI’s Graduate Basis for membership. You can find more information on the PSI and a list of accredited conversion degrees here. Therefore, students should expect to continue their studies to postgraduate level if they wish to practise as a professional psychologist. Alternatively, students interested in becoming professional psychologists should consider the BA (Hons) in Psychology at SETU, which is fully accredited by the PSI.

If you do not wish to become a professional psychologist, studying psychology is nevertheless of strong benefit to students. Studying psychology is a great way to make a candidate more attractive to employers as students in this field learn the fundamentals of how humans behave and think, which are key skills in a number of professions, especially those that work directly with clients.

Strong, transferable skills can be obtained through studying psychology, such as:

  • Learning how to effectively learn and to communicate with others
  • Learning to think about behaviour from an experimental perspective
  • Learning to critically question and evaluate what you read and hear
  • Develop empathy for others when you analyse their actions
  • Reflecting on how you think and how other people think
  • Considering how to apply psychological principles to understand and improve relationships, work life, and your community.

Therefore, college graduates who have a psychology focus in their degree have a wide variety of potential career options, ranging from nursing and social work to teaching, police work, law, education and business, amongst others.

As part of the BA (Hons) students can opt in to extend their studies by one year and participate in Study Abroad. This allows students the opportunity to spend one academic year in a partner institution and then return to SETU to undertake their final year of the degree. Students who take this option will graduate with a BA (Hons) International.
