International sportswoman and South East Technological University (SETU) Recreation and Sport Management graduate Hayley Fitzsimons explains why the University was a good decision for her.
I chose Recreation and Sport Management because I have a love for sport first and foremost and then because of the business aspect. You are getting a 50:50 mix of both disciplines. SETU graduate, Hayley Fitzsimons
Choosing SETU
I chose SETU because the course I wanted was there, plus it was on my doorstep! There was no point in moving away from home and you get home-cooked food as well! I came straight from the Leaving Cert to the University, it was a good decision that I made and I’m so glad I did it.
Balancing sport and study
It's fair to say that I'm sport mad! I compete for Ireland in the Javelin, shotput, and discus. Right now, I am in full-time training for the World Dwarf Games and the International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports (IWAS) World Games. I am currently taking a year out before I do my master's degree.
Maximising opportunities
I chose Recreation and Sport Management because I have a love for sport first and foremost and then because of the business aspect. You are getting a 50:50 mix of both disciplines. I thought that it would be a great opportunity because you can get two degrees out of it. So I went for it and loved it!
Positive student-lecturer relationships
My personality certainly grew during my time at SETU – I got more confident. I also learned a lot, and there is a great relationship between the students and the lecturers in the course. Professionally, I learned a lot about business and the sports side of things, so I will be able to bring that to my job in the future.
