Since graduating in 2024 with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Software Development, Sebastian Firsaev reflects on his enriching journey at SETU.
From tailored learning to career-launching opportunities, Sebastian's university experience laid the foundation for a successful career in the IT sector. When deciding on what course of study to pursue at third-level, Sebastian prioritised reputation and location. He wanted an alternative to city-based institutions, favouring the chance to study close to home in the southeast without compromising on the quality of academic delivery. SETU's longstanding reputation for producing highly-skilled and industry-ready IT specialists, combined with its emphasis on practical learning and hands-on experience, ultimately solidified his choice.
Starting as a mature student
At the age of 24, Sebastian applied to SETU through the CAO to the University's B.Sc. (Hons) in Software Development. He had previously commenced an arts degree, as well as gaining experience working in retail and manufacturing management. However, after much thought, Sebastian decided to shift focus and enter a field that truly excited him. The flexibility on offer from SETU's software development degree course was a key factor in his decision. It allowed him to balance his studies with other commitments, while diving deeper into his curiosity about emerging technologies. Sebastian found the course to be the perfect mix of theory and practical application, applauding the well-balanced course content.

Connections and community
Beyond his studies, Sebastian acknowledges the friendships he formed at SETU as one of the most rewarding aspects of his college life. He notes that his favourite part was connecting with like-minded people who shared the same interests as him.
From internship to employment
SETU’s emphasis on career development proved instrumental in Sebastian’s journey. During his third year of study, he secured an internship that led to a permanent position. He said, “I applied for a full-time role as soon as the internship ended and was offered a position during my final year, I started working there in June, right after my final exams.”
A bright future ahead
Looking back, Sebastian feels he made the right choice in pursuing his degree at SETU. He emphasised that his goal was to start a degree in the IT industry, and that he is thrilled to say he achieved it.
Sebastian is currently working as a business process consultant with SAP. His story highlights the transformative power of education and the opportunities that come with a supportive learning experience.
