Paul Mitchell, from Naas, Co. Kildare, is a recent graduate of SETU’s Applied Addiction Studies and Community Development course.

Paul enrolled on the Bachelor of Arts in Applied Addiction Studies and Community Development via Springboard as a mature student with the opportunity to study on a part-time basis. He was driven by a personal mission to turn his lived experience with addiction into a path to help others. Paul said, “I wanted to use my lived experience of addiction to help others, as it nourishes my own recovery.” This motivation has guided his journey, providing purpose and personal growth along the way.

A mature student’s experience

As a part-time student, Paul found that an An Cosán programme was the perfect fit. He said, “Lifelong Learning is ideal for mature students who can only do part-time work.” Paul praises the flexible learning options that allowed him to balance his studies with other commitments. His favourite module, Drugs and Crime in a Global Context, provided deeper insight into the intersection of addiction and societal issues, further fuelling his passion for community work.

Friendships and social connections

One of the highlights of Paul’s time studying, was the friendships he made along the way. He said, “The people I have met and the friends I have made along the way were the real highlights of my college experience.” Building connections with fellow students not only enriched his studies, but also created a support network that he knows will last far beyond graduation.

Advice for prospective mature students

Reflecting on his journey, Paul offers valuable advice to other mature students considering returning to education. He said, “Focus on your educational journey, not the destination or marks. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; that’s where the learning happens.” Paul also emphasised the importance of collaboration, “Collaborate and connect as much as possible with your fellow students, it builds lasting bonds and allows you to absorb numerous perspectives."

Looking ahead

With his course complete, Paul is ready to put his knowledge and experience into practice, empowered by his time at SETU. His story serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of education and the importance of using personal experiences to support and uplift others.
