Students from SETU's Summerhill Road Campus recently explored Dublin’s vibrant art scene, visiting the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) and the Hugh Lane Gallery.
This field trip offered students exposure to thought-provoking exhibitions and discussions on the social power of art.
At the IMMA, students toured the impactful ‘Take a Breath’ exhibit, which explores the concept of breath through themes like resilience, social justice, and environmental activism. The experience deepened students’ appreciation for art as a medium for global awareness and empathy.
While in Dublin, the group visited the new public installation by SETU Fine Art lecturer Remco DeFouw on the site of the National Children’s Hospital. The installation consists of a series of large-scale dandelion sculptures symbolising light and hope.
The final stop on the trip was the visit to Hugh Lane Gallery, where students viewed La Grande Illusion, an exhibit by renowned Irish artist Brian Maguire. Known for his intense portrayals of war zones and marginalised communities, the students had the unique opportunity to meet Brian, who shared insights into his creative process and advocacy, offering students a rare perspective on how art can address global issues.
This educational trip provided more than just exposure to contemporary art. It showcased the potential creative expression can have to inspire empathy, resilience, and thoughtful engagement with the world.
