The Bausch & Lomb Physics Project Award has been awarded to South East Technological University (SETU) student Shane Hearne.
The recipient of the award for best final year project by a student of the BSc (Hons) in Physics for Modern Technology, sponsored by Bausch & Lomb has been revealed to be Shane Hearne.
The Department of Science at South East Technological University (SETU) recently held its industry sponsored awards ceremony via Zoom.
These awards were sponsored by Source Bioscience, Environmental Science Association of Ireland, Sanofi, Bausch & Lomb, Sofrimar, Dawn Meats, Comeragh Veterinary Practice, Dairymaster, AIB and for the first time, Trivium Vet.
Accessible quantum computing
Shane's project, supervised by Dr John Houlihan, explored avenues through which quantum computing can be made more accessible.
Shane investigated the nature of several quantum algorithms using the Python programming language. He followed this with an implementation of the algorithms on both simulated and real quantum computers through the IBM Quantum Experience program, the results of which enabled Shane to investigate key practical issues for the scaling of Quantum Computing Technologies to real-world applications.
The award was presented by Kevin Fahy, R&D manager at Bausch & Lomb.
