Since graduating with a degree in Public Relations and Media, Lucy Daverne from Wexford, reflects on her journey at SETU. From hands-on learning experiences to forging connections, Lucy’s academic path was a transformative one.

Choosing the right path

Lucy chose an alternative route to university, beginning with a Level 5 qualification at Carlow Institute of Further Education. This solid foundation allowed her to seamlessly progress to a Level 8 bachelor’s programme at SETU. Motivated by a passion for communications, Lucy chose a Bachelor of Arts in Media and Public Relations in the hopes of building a career in the field.

“I wanted to understand the media landscape and gain the skills to navigate the public relations and marketing industries.”

Invaluable experience

One of Lucy’s favourite aspects of the course was working in the studio with cutting-edge equipment.

She said, “The hands-on experience was invaluable.”

Learning from lecturers with real world expertise added another layer of depth, making her coursework both practical and engaging.

Embracing opportunities

Reflecting on her time at SETU, Lucy describes her experience as overwhelmingly positive. From tackling challenging projects to delivering presentations, she embraced every opportunity. While she joined as a mature student, she found camaraderie among her peers and enjoyed the occasional student night out.

Gaining insight

The course gave Lucy a broader understanding of the media’s influence on society and the economy, crediting her lecturers for their knowledge and support.

“The lectures were incredibly engaging and helped me see the bigger picture.”
