Graduate of the MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology, Cameron Molloy Moules scored his dream role in football after studying at SETU.

Past pupil of St Paul’s CBS, Dublin, Cameron is an avid footballer, who set his sights on a career in football, whether that was on the pitch or within the backroom staff.

Prior to studying at SETU, Cameron participated in a player’s course with the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) with the hopes of playing full-time: “As the professional playing side didn’t materialise, the FAI course gave me an excellent step into the working world of sports administration and coaching,” Cameron said.

Coaching at the highest level

“I worked at both Sport Ireland and Athletics Ireland and had the opportunity to coach at the highest level of football in Ireland, the League of Ireland, before enrolling in SETU’s MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology,” he added.

No-brainer

Cameron decided to study the programme at SETU because, “Sport and Exercise Psychology has been a huge area of curiosity for me for a long time and I was sure when the time was right, I would pursue education further. The recommendations I received about SETU’s MSc programme far exceeded anything else out there, so it was a no-brainer for me to apply.”

I landed my dream full-time job in football while coming to the end of this course. It undoubtedly strengthened my CV and my skill set in that regard.

Impact on career

Cameron discussed the impact studying at SETU had on his career, explaining: “Firstly, I landed my dream full-time job in football while coming to the end of this course. It undoubtedly strengthened my CV and my skill set in that regard.”

“Also, as a more psychologically informed coach, I have yet to experience any course or training that has impacted me as much as this course in terms of how I coach, lead, create environments, promote behaviours and more,” Cameron continued.

Most beneficial module

The module that benefitted Cameron most was “Mental Skills Training with Emma". “Where I am in my career right now, mental skills for performance is something I find myself leaning on every single day since completing the module,” he said.

Residential weeks

The residential weeks were a highlight for Cameron: “Waterford is a gorgeous town, and I loved staying there and exploring for the week in my spare time. The Cork Road Campus facilities are excellent, and the high-performance facility is outstanding.”

Cameron's advice

Cameron shared advice for adult learners, saying, “If this is an area of interest to you, I would strongly suggest giving this course a go. The tutors, the content, the class size, the facilities, the blended calendar commitments - every single piece of the puzzle made sense to me as a busy professional with kids and I'm delighted I signed up.”
