Alex Quinn is currently pursuing a career in aircraft maintenance engineering through Ryanair DAC’s line maintenance facility in Dublin.
As part of his apprenticeship with SOLAS, Alex is completing his EASA B2 modules at SETU, a key step towards earing both a national craft certificate and an EASA Aircraft Maintenance License. This will authorise him to perform avionics maintenance, focusing on electronic and electrical systems.
Choosing the apprenticeship route
Though Alex had considered a career in aircraft maintenance when he was younger, he chose to travel first. When the opportunity arose to apply for the apprenticeship in 2022. He jumped at the chance, stating “I always had an interest in aircraft maintenance, and when I saw the applications open, I knew it was the right time to get started."
Hands-on learning and in-depth knowledge
Throughout his apprenticeship, Alex has enjoyed the increasing depth of the course material, especially the combination of practical and theoretical learning. He began with the basics at Shannon Aircraft Maintenance School, applying his knowledge in the hangar before moving on to more detailed modules at SETU. Alex said, “I really like how we’re getting more and more into the nitty-gritty details of aircraft theory. Learning the structures and systems in-depth has been really rewarding." This hands-on, progressive approach has been essential in preparing Alex for a future in the industry.
A global qualification with unlimited potential
Completing the EASA B2 modules at SETU brings Alex closer to his goal of acquiring his license after finishing his studies in Carlow. Alex said, “Its’s a great qualification to have, especially with the shortage of engineers in the industry right now. The B2 license will allow me to work anywhere in the world and make a good living."
Balancing engineering and legislation
Looking ahead, Alex is considering further education after obtaining his license. A master’s degree is a definite possibility, though he is still weighing his options. “I’m undecided as to whether I want to go deeper into the engineering side of things or focus on the legislation around the industry. One of the great things about this course is that we’re educated in both areas, giving us the option to take our career in either direction."
“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to do my EASA B2 modules at SETU. It’s a great course, and the facilities are fantastic."
Alex Quinn
As Alex progresses through his apprenticeship and prepares for his future, he is grateful for the opportunities and experiences he has gained so far. With a solid foundation in both the technical and regulatory aspects of aircraft maintenance, he is well-equipped to succeed in the aviation industry, whether staying in engineering or exploring the legislative side of the field.
