From Bunclody to SETU
Chelsea Sunderland, from Bunclody, Co. Wexford, embarked on her academic journey at SETU with a passion for healthcare. Choosing the Higher Certificate in Pharmacy Technician Studies, she later advanced to the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy Technician Studies. During her time at SETU, Chelsea built invaluable relationships, and these connections became an integral part of her experience.
Choosing SETU
Speaking about her decision to attend SETU, Chelsea said, “I chose SETU not only because it was close to home, but I loved the idea of smaller classrooms. The close-knit environment made learning more personal and engaging. The lecturers got to know me personally, which made it so much easier to ask questions and get the help I needed.”
She continued, “During my time at SETU, I built strong relationships with both my lecturers and classmates. The campus was so welcoming, and I loved getting involved in activities like the library services and clubs and societies. I made lifelong friends, and I still stay in touch with some of my lecturers, which shows how personal and supportive the environment is.”
A comprehensive course pathway
The Higher Certificate in Science in Pharmacy Technician Studies (Level 6) is a two-year programme that provides students with the foundational skills and knowledge needed to assist pharmacists in community and hospital settings. It covers essential topics such as dispensing, drug actions, and patient care, blending classroom learning with practical work placements to offer real-world experience. Graduates like Chelsea, often use this programme as a launchpad for further studies.
The Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy Technician Studies (Level 7) is a one-year add-on degree that builds on the Level 6 qualification, focusing on advanced areas such as pharmaceutical management and clinical pharmacy practices. This programme is ideal for those looking to enhance their expertise and pursue leadership roles in pharmacy, with continued emphasis on hands-on experience through work placement. Together, these courses provide a comprehensive pathway for a fulfilling career.
The impact of work placement
Chelsea’s work placement was one of the most transformative parts of her time at SETU. She had a work placement in a community pharmacy. For Chelsea, it became so much more than just a learning experience when, after graduation, the pharmacy offered her a full-time position.
“This was a dream come true”, she says. “The team there was incredibly supportive, making it a smooth transition from being a student to becoming a professional.”
Favourite modules
Speaking about the content of the course, Chelsea said, “One of my favourite modules during my studies was ‘Drug Actions and Uses’. It was fascinating to learn how drugs work, their uses, side effects, and interactions. I use what I learned in that module every day in my job, and it has been invaluable.
A well-rounded college experience
Chelsea says, “My time at SETU wasn’t just about academics - it was about growing as a person. I commuted daily from Bunclody and managed to balance my studies with an active social life. I made amazing friends, got involved in clubs and societies, and enjoyed the sense of community on campus. My work placement also added so much value, giving me real-world experience and setting me up for success.”
Advice to future students
Chelsea concluded, “For me, SETU was more than just an educational institution, it was the foundation of my career and personal growth. I’d encourage anyone considering studying there to embrace everything the college has to offer. Get involved, build connections, and take full advantage of the supportive environment. It’s an experience that will shape you for life.”
