Danielle Phelan recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Social Science from South East Technological University (SETU). For Danielle, it was a great choice. She feels that inequality is a topic that often hits home and it was something that caught her interest.

Gender pay gap

I have noticed how women's pay would be lower than men's and how there are different issues that women have experienced that men may be unaffected by. I also find gender an interesting topic in general. Those topics fascinated me and pulled me towards studying social science.

Life as a mature student

I was nervous and worried about returning to college as a mature student. I was worried that I was going to be a lot older than many of the other students but thankfully there were a few other mature students in my year. I was nervous at first returning to education, but the people were so nice and helpful, which made it more enjoyable. There is ample support available in SETU, and the lecturers want you to succeed so they will aid you in any way needed. I feel my experience was the same as many other mature students who return to college.

University life

University experiences are different for everyone and that’s what makes them unique. The highlight of my time at SETU was gaining practical experience and meeting so many fascinating people. I got an opportunity to volunteer at a women’s shelter. It was a great experience and the people there were lovely. The people at SETU were also brilliant; they made it much more enjoyable. Making new and long-term friends is generally an aspect of college life which tends to be a great moment for everyone.
