SETU graduate Zara Gunnar is a softwaredeveloper for Security Risk Advisors (SRA). She credits her career success to the dynamic way our Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Software Systems Development is taught.

Dynamic approach

I chose to study the BSc (Hons) in Software Systems Development at South East Technological University (SETU) straight after my Leaving Certificate. I opted for the programme because of its dynamic approach to teaching theoretical and practical aspects of software development. This solid foundation in both disciplines has been instrumental in gaining diverse work experience. My journey is a testament to the University's commitment to preparing its students for many roles within the tech industry

Placement

Placement opportunities were limited in my third year at university due to COVID-19 restrictions. Thankfully, I was offered a role as a cyber security analyst with SRA. The learnings taken from the networking and computer systems modules proved invaluable, despite having covered just one security module at the time. These equipped me with the practical skills necessary for my responsibilities as an analyst.

My journey is a testament to the University's commitment to preparing its students for many roles within the tech industry.

Gaining employment

While I found my placement rewarding, I didn’t see myself pursuing a career in security analysis going forward. When I broke the news to my manager, he thankfully recognised my work ethic, adaptability, and knowledge in the field and invited me to join SRA’s software development team on a part-time basis. This opportunity allowed me to learn more about industry practices, all while completing my degree.

Growth

I am now a full-time member of the team at SRA. I enjoy the flexibility of working remotely or commuting to the Kilkenny office if I wish. The company has invested in my professional growth; this is demonstrated by annual training sessions in Philadelphia. I have also been given the opportunity to work on several projects – from feature developments to modernising front end UIs, and most recently, handling a significant database migration.
