Wexford native, Emer Kearney, graduated from SETU’s Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Early Childhood Education and Care during the conferring session held at SETU’s Kilkenny Road campus in Carlow.
The course equips graduates to work effectively in a wide range of early years’ contexts, with children up to eight years of age. Modules include the study of, psychology, sociology, law, early years’ education and personal and professional development.
Inspired to pursue a career working with children
After being inspired by role models from her own childhood, Emer decided to pursue a career centered around working with children. Emer explained, “I always wanted to work with children. I wanted to have a positive impact on their lives, and I wanted to pursue a degree that would allow me to do that. The course at SETU provided me with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to work with kids.”
Practical approach to learning
After choosing a course with a strong emphasis on practical learning, Emer found herself growing in confidence throughout her four years of study. Emer explained, “During my work placement I got to work with children from six months to six years of age. I was able to apply what I had learned in the classroom and work alongside professional educators in a variety of different early years settings. The placements really allowed me to grow in confidence and learn on the job.”
Along with work placement modules, Emer found the guest speakers and facilitated talks allowed her to learn more about the industry she would soon be entering. Emer stated, “I was able to attend different talks held by SETU on campus. Guest speakers from forest schools and other child and family organisations were invited to talk to us. It was great to hear their insights.”
Student life at SETU
When speaking about her experience as an SETU student, Emer shared, “I had a positive experience during my time studying. There is a great sense of unity and support at SETU. The university has amazing supports, staff and facilities that really enhance the overall student experience.”
Sharing her favourite part of student life, Emer said, “Forming my friendships was one of the best parts of my student experience.”
