SETU was delighted to host the third edition of the EU-CONEXUS PhD summer school from 24-28 July. Delivered in collaboration with Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest, this year’s school focused on professional development and leadership.

The 28 PhD students from the nine universities of the EU-CONEXUS European University Alliance and Odessa National University taking part represented a wide variety of academic disciplines from science, engineering, arts, architecture, law, social science and sports science, among others. Included were six SETU PhD students from both Carlow and Waterford campuses, studying engineering, science, and social science.

Over the course of the week, the PhD students attended lectures covering a wide breadth of topics related to transversal skills, such as culture and creativity, enhancing research profiles and visibility, teamwork and collaboration, social media and kickstarting your career.

SETU is part of the EU-CONEXUS European University Alliance with eight universities across Europe and is a fully-fledged transnational European University and research alliance offering education, training, study programmes, performing research and links with socioeconomic actors for supporting innovation.

EU-CONEXUS has a key objective of delivering joint PhD level actions to developing a European higher education inter-university virtual campus. The joint aim is to establish a common framework for a joint EU-CONEXUS PhD programme and an EU-CONEXUS Doctoral School that provides a vision of doctoral programmes and research activities for PhD students which will introduce new joint, flexible and innovative curricula for PhD level students, based on inter-disciplinary and cross-sectoral approaches.

The students and lecturers were welcomed to SETU by Dr Geraldine Canny, Head of Research, and Professor Peter McLoughlin, Head of the School of Science and Computing and the Executive Lead of the EU-CONEXUS European University Alliance at SETU.

Over 50 hours of seminars were delivered by a variety of lecturers from all of the EU-CONEXUS partner universities including from SETU, Dr Niall O’Reilly, PMBRC, Dr Susan Flynn, Head of the Department of Arts, Dr Rebecca Power, EU-CONEXUS Senior Project Officer with responsibility for developing the inter-university Careers network and Angela Collins, Head of Careers.
