Rachel O’Connor is currently studying a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Computing in Interactive Digital Art and Design at SETU. With a keen interest in combining creativity with technology, she is embracing the huge variety of skills that the course offers as she prepares for a promising future in digital design and development.

A broad range of opportunities

When Rachel was filling out her CAO application in 2022, she was unsure of the career path she wanted to take. She chose a course at SETU because she had a desire to explore multiple different avenues such as games programming, web development, animation and 3D modelling. “At the time, I wasn’t quite sure of which direction I wanted to go in, so a course that offered a range of options seemed like the best fit for me”.

Participating in the national Games Fleadh

One of the highlights of Rachel’s experience so far has been the opportunity to collaborate with Games Development students and participate in events such as the Games Fleadh and Game Jamwhere students get to put their newly acquired skills into practice. These hands-on experiences have been a key element to Rachel’s enjoyment of the course.

Attending Dingle Animation Festival

Reflecting on her overall experience, Rachel acknowledged the supportive environment at SETU. She said, “Lecturers are friendly and are always willing to offer their guidance and a helping hand. The workload can be challenging at times, but the results make it all worthwhile."

As for life on campus, Rachel has made the most of the events and facilities SETU has to offer by joining clubs and societies and participating in events such as Dingle Animation Festival. She said,Taking part in the different events organised by the university and making friends through joining clubs has been the highlight of my college experience."

Looking towards the future

With graduation set for 2026, Rachel looks forward to entering the jobs market and applying the skills she’s learned throughout her time at the University. “I’m excited to enter the professional field once my studies are complete”, he concludes.
