Vivian Ibeto recently travelled to Ireland from Nigeria, following several years of work in the health insurance industry, to study SETU’s Master of Business in Finance and Business Analytics.

Having already graduated from Veritas University with a Bachelor of Economics, Vivian saw SETU as the right university for her to explore new opportunities in a familiar field.

Flexibility

My MBS prides itself on flexibility, which enabled me to select an internship for my third semester. This, when added to the Business Intelligence, Financial Regulation and Compliance, Corporate Financial Analysis, and Programming for Data Science modules I took in the second semester, resulted in a rounded education. I believe the knowledge base I built from these varied modules helped me to secure a summer internship at Ernst and Young (EY), one of the ‘big four’ accounting firms.

Opportunity

Working at EY provided me with insights into the world of accounting and Irish work culture, which I absolutely love. Applying the skills and knowledge obtained at SETU in a real-world setting reinforced the practical value of my studies and will certainly prepare me for future challenges. I am happy to say that I have since received an offer to join their graduate programme.

"I loved studying at SETU and living in Waterford. It’s just two hours from the hustle and bustle of Dublin, meaning there are fewer distractions from study but it’s also close enough for it to be easily commutable by bus or train."

Guidance

Navigating software tools such as Tableau Prep Builder & Desktop was challenging at first, but I eventually became comfortable using them thanks to a combination of consistent practice and patient guidance from my lecturers. This experience proved invaluable during my internship at EY, where I encountered similar software platforms.

Waterford

Waterford

I loved studying at SETU and living in Waterford. It’s just two hours from the hustle and bustle of Dublin, meaning there are fewer distractions from study but it’s also close enough for it to be easily commutable by bus or train. The people are kind and welcoming, which makes adapting easier. I also appreciated having a church just a five minute walk from my accommodation, making it convenient to attend mass. Waterford city centre also boasts some great shopping. All the shops are within walking distance, helping me save money on transport.

The highlight for me, however, was Tramore. I loved visiting its beach as it’s a beautiful place to relax, unwind and enjoy the sea air.

Advice

My advice is to embrace the learning process, even if it initially seems daunting. Learning a new skill is rewarding once you put the right amount of time and dedication into it. I would also suggest that SETU students explore the resources available to them – the people at Student Life and Learning are brilliant and always at hand to support your academic growth.
