Originally from New Delhi, India, international student Ram Pratap Singh is currently completing a Master of Business in Finance and Business Analytics at SETU.

Ram discusses his journey from working as a study abroad advisor for The Mentors Circle, to moving to Ireland for postgraduate study.

Before moving to Ireland

I pursued a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Jagan Institute of Management Studies (JIMS) Rohini, in New Delhi, India, and enrolled in a Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme at Bhartiya Vidyapeeth, New Delhi. A Graduate Diploma in International Business led to my employment at The Mentors Circle as an education consultant and manager. This educational consultancy has an agent partnership with SETU and works closely with universities to give deserving students a chance to study abroad.

I was an active education consultant dealing primarily with promoting Irish higher education in India for seven fulfilling years. I served as a mentor to Indian students, helping them navigate the pathways to higher education and empowering them to pursue their dreams of studying abroad.

"During my time at SETU, I had the privilege of receiving support and guidance from dedicated lecturers."

First-hand experience

For the last two years, I searched for a programme and university that aligned with my career aspirations. Having completed my MBA in India, I recognised the importance of expanding my expertise in the realm of analytics. In being a mentor to numerous Indian students, I gained insight into the value that having first-hand experience studying abroad would be for me.

Ireland’s reputation

What stood out to me about Ireland was the country’s reputation as a global hub for innovation, entrepreneurship, and networking, along with its strong ties to multinational corporations. SETU was a perfect fit for me, so I applied to the Master of Business in Finance and Business Analytics

Supportive environment

During my time at SETU, I had the privilege of receiving support and guidance from dedicated lecturers, such as Katie Scallan, course leader, and Denis Harrington, Head of Graduate Business.

Lecturers Ruth Barry and Aidan Duane imparted knowledge on real-time data and cutting-edge technology but also took the time to explain concepts and assist me with assignments. Their mentorship has been invaluable in shaping my academic journey at SETU.

Adjusting to life in Ireland

Adjusting to life in Ireland

Coming from a bustling city in India, I appreciated the slower pace of life in Waterford. One aspect of Irish culture that stood out to me was the strong sense of community. Irish people are friendly, humble, and supportive, throughout my studies I never felt that I was far from my home country.

International student ambassador

One significant aspect of my journey has been my role as an international student ambassador, representing SETU and promoting Irish education to prospective students. As a student ambassador, I showcased student life at SETU to a global audience. This experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and encouraged personal growth.

My advice to incoming international students

It's essential to understand the specific skills and interests that each programme offers and how they align with your educational background and career goals.

I would also advise international students to make use of the support services available to them, such as orientation, academic assistance, and counselling services. These resources help you to navigate the challenges of studying abroad and ensure a smooth transition to life at SETU.
