South East Technological University (SETU) graduate Michael Ryan worked at several multinational companies before returning to college as a mature student. Having opted for SETU’s Higher Diploma in Business Systems Analysis (BSA), the Limerick native says the programme provided him with a flexible skillset that allowed him to bridge the worlds of business and IT.

Flexibility

SETU’s BSA HDip is offered in an online format. This was an important factor when considering my work commitments, which would have made attending on-site classes challenging. The flexibility that online offered also allowed me to study at my own pace. The course provided extensive business-focused content, complementing my technical background.

Recognising the increasing importance of tech and business relationships, I valued the opportunity to deepen my understanding of business functions and their integration with IT. The programme struck a great balance between the teaching of tech-driven trends such as web development, data analytics and digital technologies, and more established ones like ERP systems, database design, and software engineering. This approach equipped me with a diverse skill set which is crucial in landing a job at a multinational company.

Beneficial content

The diverse range of topics covered was hugely beneficial. It not only introduced me to new areas like web programming and data analytics, but it also deepened my understanding of areas that I was more familiar with, such as ERP and software validation. The relevance of these subjects coupled with my corporate experiences instilled confidence in tackling challenges that I would have approached with trepidation in the past.

Bridging the gap

I believe the programme offers an excellent foundation for those aspiring to bridge the gap between IT and business. With technology rapidly evolving and organizations increasingly relying on leaner teams to execute numerous projects, there is a growing need for professionals with a hybrid skillset, and this programme equips individuals with the tools to fill this gap.

Expectations

While acknowledging the programme's comprehensive approach, I wouldn't expect to get into immediate specialization in specific areas upon completion. Instead, graduates should gain insight into various fields, enabling them to identify their strengths and preferences for future specialization. The programme's emphasis on creating a versatile skillset allows graduates to navigate diverse roles within the industry.

Online learning

I also highlight the convenience of online learning, particularly for those balancing full-time work commitments. Access to recorded lectures and online materials allowed me to study at my own pace. However, given that this is a largely online-based programme, it's important to make an extra effort and build a strong classmate network for collaborative learning and support.
