Katie Phair from Birr, county Offaly, has had a longstanding passion for microbiology, which began with a keen interest in microorganisms and innovative antimicrobial solutions. This fascination led her to embark on a PhD in Microbiology at SETU’s Carlow campus in 2021.

Katie's PhD study was funded by the Irish Research Council through a Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship

With guidance from her supervisors, Dr Damien Brady, Lecturer in Microbiology at SETU, and Dr Carmel Kealey, Head of Department of Pharmaceutical Science and Biotechnology at TUS, Katie crafted a compelling research proposal during the final year of her undergraduate studies in microbiology from TUS, an achievement that marked the beginning of her exciting academic journey.

Pioneering research

Katie’s doctoral research focuses on developing novel antimicrobials for the infant formula industry, tackling a critical issue in global food safety. Her time at SETU has been enriched by hands-on learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and opportunities to work abroad.

She said, “I found it challenging at times, but very rewarding”

Global collaboration

A standout experience for Katie was her Erasmus in Portugal, where she honed her skills in antimicrobial susceptibility testing and genetic techniques at a clinical microbiology lab.

Presenting her findings at international conferences in Scotland, Portugal, and England has been another highlight for Katie.

SETU encourages us to share our findings and connect with researchers around the world. It’s fulfilling to see how our work here can contribute to global challenges.”

Support and community

Katie speaks fondly of the close-knit community at SETU, where staff and fellow postgraduates in EnviroCORE, have been invaluable in problem-solving and sharing ideas.

She said, “Everyone at SETU is genuinely interested in your progress and always willing to help.”

Beyond the lab, Katie has found balance through activities in the college, such as yoga and pilates, which she credits for helping her manage the demands of PhD life.

She said, “Taking time to move and de-stress has been essential for staying focused and grounded.”

A future in problem-solving

Katie’s experience at SETU has prepared her for a future that blends critical thinking and innovation. Whether continuing in research or transitioning to industry, she is eager to apply the skills and insights gained during her PhD.

“SETU has given me the tools and support to contribute meaningfully to my field.”
