Kilkenny native and inter-county hurling player, Eoin Cody, achieved his Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Sport Management and Coaching (Gaelic Games) at SETU.
The blend of business and sporting modules was intriguing to the elite athlete who successfully graduated from the University’s Carlow campus ceremonies.
Combining athletic success with academic achievement
The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Sports Management and Coaching (Gaelic Games) degree equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to attain careers in both the business and sporting worlds. Students of the course are exposed to performance analysis, sport psychology, marketing and the top-class facilities at SETU.
When talking about why the course first appealed to him, Eoin said, “I found the blend of sport and business in the course very interesting. I have a real love for GAA, particularly hurling. Having dedicated many years to playing the sport, I wanted to understand more about coaching and player development, and the wider infrastructure of the game and its management. Friends who previously completed the degree also spoke highly of it, and so I decided to apply.”

A pathway to teaching
The bachelor's course prepares students for a variety of potential career prospects with graduates excelling in sports coaching and player development, sports science, business, and management.
Previously named Young Hurler of the Year, Eoin wanted a degree that would combine his love for hurling with his goal of working as a teacher.
I have such a passion for GAA, but I also wanted a practical degree that gave me a range of career options
Eoin Cody, on choosing his degree
In Eoin’s case, he wanted to pursue a career as a secondary school teacher, specialising in business studies. The course offered him a strong foundation in the subject area that allowed him to pursue his Professional Masters in Post Primary Education and enter teaching practice at St Kieran’s College in Kilkenny.
Eoin said, “The business modules in the course equipped me with the knowledge required to teach both the Junior and Leaving Certificate material in schools. I hope to teach at secondary level for the rest of my professional career.”
SETU sports scholar
Eoin received an elite sporting scholarship during his time at SETU. The scholarship is designed to support student-athletes in balancing the demands of competitive sport with their academic responsibilities.
With the scholarship and support from SETU staff, Eoin excelled both on the field and in the classroom. Currently playing for Kilkenny as an inter-county hurler, Eoin has remained a prominent figure within the national GAA community.

Time at SETU
Eoin built strong relationships and bonds with lecturers and fellow students at SETU. He said, “I had a great experience at SETU. I found the environment and student atmosphere very kind and friendly. This was equally matched by the staff and lecturers throughout the college.”
Advice for others
Eoin shared advice for anyone with an interest in sport and business, who might be unsure of what to study. He said, “If you are uncertain about picking a college course and you want to do something that incorporates your sporting passion with a valuable level 7 or 8 degree, then this is the course for you.”
