Having enrolled at SETU’s Cork Road campus in Waterford as a mature student, James embraced his love for making new friends throughout his time here, explaining, “It’s important to know and connect with those around you – no matter the age difference.”

Background

I worked for a busy Renault dealership as a mechanic for seven years, but the Covid-19 pandemic made me rethink my career options. I knew a group of lads who had all studied at SETU; they had nothing but good things to say about the University. They were all building successful careers at the time so I decided that I would return to university as a mature student after the pandemic. I studied Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Mechanical Engineering for three years. In 2023, I decided to commit to the University for a little longer by adding a one-year BEng in Manufacturing Engineering.

Engineering Society

I joined the Engineering Society at SETU’s campus in Waterford as I believe it is important to get to know people with similar interests. Engineering has relatively small class sizes, so it was important to know and connect with those around you – no matter the age difference. As well as meeting new people, making friends, and having the craic, it was helpful to chat with engineering students who were ahead of me as they gave me an idea of what to expect in the years to come.

Engineering wasn’t the only society I was involved in while at SETU. I also joined Karting Soc and Surf Soc, both of which were a great laugh.

Society highlights

One of the highlights of my time at SETU was a trip I planned to Germany with Engineering Soc. Over 40 students, all of whom studied Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering, flew to Germany and toured Volkswagen’s factory and museum in Wolfsburg and BMW’s factory in Berlin.

The trip was amazing. I made so many great memories and forged friendships for life during that week. While there was a lot of planning involved, the payback meant it was worth it.

Active student

It is important to be an ‘active student’ and talk to the people you see every day at lectures, in your dorms, or at the club or society you are involved in. University can be stressful, but focus your energy in a positive way and it will become a highly rewarding experience.

Life lessons

I’m not one to reminisce, but now that I’ve completed my final year at SETU, I feel that I’m going to miss the people and the environment. Strange as it sounds, I’ll also miss the challenges and life lessons it has taught me over the years.
