Noelle McCabe from Naas, Co Kildare, is a dedicated student of pharmacy technician studies at SETU.

Noelle is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Pharmacy Technician Studies (Level 7) and expects to graduate in 2025.

Expanding knowledge

Having completed earlier certificate courses in pharmacy, Noelle wanted to deepen her knowledge and understanding of the area by embarking on further study. The modules offered on SETU's degree course appealed to her, particularly those focusing on patient conditions, drug interactions, and the business of pharmacy operations. Noelle was especially drawn to the `Control of Contamination and Infection` module where she explores disease prevention as a healthcare professional.

An add-on course to enhance existing qualifications

The course Noelle is studying is a one-year, full-time course offering 60 credits. Designed as an add-on for those who have completed 120 credits in the Higher Certificate in Pharmacy Technician Studies or an equivalent qualification, this programme equips learners with advanced skills to enhance their roles within pharmacy teams. It aligns with the objectives of Sláinte Care and is delivered through dynamic teaching methods. Students develop technical expertise and transferable skills, preparing them to contribute ethically and responsibly to the healthcare system.

Project on Mental Health Services, a highlight

Projects have been a standout element of Noelle’s college experience. She particularly enjoyed creating a mental health service tailored to her community. This project allowed her to blend her academic knowledge with real-world applications. Similarly, a project on microbial resistance gave her the opportunity to delve into preventative measures for a global health issue.

Getting involved as Class Rep

Another highlight of Noelle’s time at SETU has been her role as class representative, a position she was honoured to be elected to by her peers. About the experience so far, she says, “It is a privilege for me to represent my class.”

"Representing my class has allowed me to develop my leadership skills and foster connections in my academic environment."

Alternative pathways

Noelle encourages prospective students to pursue a course they’re passionate about. Transferring between institutions lead to the desired outcome for Noelle. She is currently converting her higher cert diploma into a Bachelor of Science through an add-on programme at SETU.

"The transition from school to university can be challenging, but genuine interest in the subjects makes it enjoyable. I would also advise students not to worry if they don’t achieve the exact CAO results they hoped for. There are alternative pathways to higher education and a range of courses out there. So don’t be disheartened if you have to take a slightly different route than expected.”
