Research staff from across Europe gathered at South East Technological University (SETU) for a two-day conference aimed at strengthening research support networks through international collaboration.
Held on 8 and 9 April at the SETU Arena, the event formed part of the ENABLES project, an EU-CONEXUS initiative to foster mobility and professional development opportunities for research managers across partner universities.
Delegates from Ireland, France, Spain, Greece, Romania, Lithuania, Croatia, Germany and Cyprus took part in a dynamic programme of workshops and networking activities focused on sharing best practices in research support.

The event was officially opened by Susie Cullinane, SETU Research Systems Support Manager, who welcomed participants and highlighted the important role research managers play in driving university impact. Over the two days, attendees explored topics such as HR practices, research support services, communications, post-award services, and more.
“We were delighted to host Research Managers and Administrators for the training event covering multiple elements of supporting research and researchers,” said Mike Kinsella, SETU EU-CONEXUS Academic Lead.
“Attendees from all EU-CONEXUS ENABLES partners were present and benefitted from the high-quality and interactive training sessions. Group work and discussions supported exchange of best practice and enhanced the professional networks and skills of all attendees. It was a pleasure to host our EU-CONEXUS colleagues and facilitate lively discussions and professional development.”, Mike Kinsella continued.

A guided walk along the nearby Waterford Greenway offered an opportunity for informal exchange, while a dinner held at the Tower Hotel gave delegates the chance to reflect and discuss topics in a relaxed setting.
Lucie Vaucel, La Rochelle University’s EU-CONEXUS PDSO, commented: “I am very glad to have had this great opportunity to present at the RMA event organised by SETU on April 8–9. I could share some of my experience and knowledge and also learn myself through the enriching exchanges and discussions within the group. It is a very valuable experience for me. In addition, the perfect organisation and set-up by SETU made this event a really nice moment overall. A huge thank you to all SETU colleagues (Eva in particular) for that!”
Assoc Prof Natasha Saca from the Technical University of Civil Engineering in Bucharest added: “I would like to express my gratitude for organising an engaging event focused on research support and professional development. The sessions offered important information on various topics, including research support and culture, managing research and funding, reporting, impact and communication, and self-development."

Assoc Prof Natasha Saca continued by saying: "The combination of knowledgeable speakers, practical resources, and a supportive environment highlighted your dedication. During my mobility visit to SETU, I had an excellent opportunity to connect with colleagues from partner universities. The visit was meticulously organised and highly informative, resulting in a rewarding and valuable experience.”
The ENABLES mobility programme is designed to upskill research managers and foster alignment across EU-CONEXUS institutions, which include nine universities from across Europe working together on shared goals in research, education, and innovation.
This international visit allowed SETU to showcase its investment in research systems and infrastructure and to deepen relationships with European partners committed to delivering excellence in research support.
