SETU's Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Accounting has been awarded a partial CAP2 exemption by Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI), reducing the number of chartered accountancy exams a course graduate is required to sit.
The vote of confidence in the University’s accounting undergraduate programme ensures that SETU is among the first third level institutions in Ireland to offer the exemption.
Graduates can now secure an exemption from the auditing and assurance paper on completion of their two third-year audit modules. Those wishing to pursue a career in chartered accountancy will then have as little as five exam papers to complete in what is known as a partial CAP2 exemption.
A more attractive option
The waiver has the potential to make the University’s BA (Hons) in Accounting an attractive option for prospective students who wish to progress in their careers and become a chartered accountant after graduation.
SETU’s BA (Hons) in Accounting is a three-year Level 8 degree that prepares students for a career in accountancy. It is taught at the University’s Cork Road Campus in Waterford. The course offers rounded and comprehensive teaching on all aspects of the discipline, from microeconomics to business strategy. Year three students also have the opportunity to avail of internships, both in Ireland and overseas.
"This shows the standing in which our BA (Hons) in Accounting is held by the professional bodies and will be of great benefit to graduates who wish to go on and qualify as chartered accountants in the future.”
Ger Long Head of the Department of Accounting & Economics
“The vast majority of students who sit our BA (Hons) in Accounting go on to sit these exams with professional accounting bodies, so the exemption makes the BA (Hons) in Accounting a more attractive option,” said programme leader Paul Treacy.
He continued: “Students will now be in a position to be exempt from Auditing & Assurance at CAP2 level, meaning they will have fewer exams to sit to qualify as a Chartered Accountant once they complete the BA (Hons) in Accounting with us.”
A show of confidence
Ger Long, Head of the Department of Accounting & Economics, said, “We are delighted to be one of the first universities in the country to secure a CAP2 exemption for an undergraduate degree. This shows the standing in which our BA (Hons) in Accounting is held by the professional bodies and will be of great benefit to graduates who wish to go on and qualify as chartered accountants in the future.”
