SETU and Wexford GAA have reaffirmed their commitment to a growing strategic partnership that continues to make a positive impact on sports performance, education, and research in the southeast.

Now entering its next phase, the collaboration builds on a shared vision to develop sporting talent across the region while contributing to broader goals around community wellbeing, innovation, and regional development.

The partnership, which began several years ago, has supported a wide range of joint initiatives, including student placements, collaborative research projects, and access to academic expertise. These projects and placements are in areas such as sports science, coaching, rehabilitation, and performance analysis. These opportunities have opened new pathways for students and researchers to work within high-performance sporting environments, particularly through Wexford GAA’s schools and county development systems.

John Kenny, Chairman of Wexford GAAsaid, “This ongoing partnership with SETU aligns closely with the goals outlined in our strategic plan Ar Aghaidh Linn le Chéile (Onwards Together). Our vision is to be a leader, not just in sport, but in promoting values that strengthen our communities. Collaborating with SETU allows us to access expertise, resources, and innovative thinking that support this ambition.”

Wexford GAA has supported two SETU students to date through the scholarship scheme, both of whom have since progressed into full-time roles within Wexford GAA. Their work has helped to implement a countywide, integrated athletic development model within post-primary schools while also improving performance coordination at all levels of the organisation.

David Denieffe, Vice President of Student Experience at SETU, added, “SETU is proud to continue this strategic collaboration with Wexford GAA. It reflects our University’s commitment to regional engagement and applied research that has real-world impact. We look forward to supporting the next generation of leaders, practitioners, and scholars through this evolving partnership.”

The existing scholarship scheme has now been extended to support doctoral-level study, with new opportunities in sport science, business, rehabilitation, and marketing. This evolution of the scheme reflects the increasing demand for high-level expertise in high-performance sport.

Declan Browne, Programme Director of the Master of Science in Strength and Conditioning at SETU and Director of Athletic Performance for Wexford GAA, commented, “This partnership represents a shared commitment to the long-term development of sport in the region. Through joint initiatives and sustained collaboration, we’re creating opportunities for students, researchers, coaches, and athletes alike. It’s exciting to see this relationship evolve and deepen.”

For SETU, the collaboration provides students and staff alike with access to applied learning and research opportunities that enhance both academic development and employability. It also strengthens SETU’s position as a national leader in sport science education and applied research, while highlighting its commitment to regional engagement.

As the partnership continues to evolve, both SETU and Wexford GAA remain focused on deepening their collaboration, supporting the next generation of sports professionals, and creating a lasting impact through education, research and community engagement.
