The first of SETU’s annual International Day celebrations took place at the Kilkenny Road campus on Thursday, 21 November. This is a vibrant celebration of the diverse cultural heritage within our University community. It brings students and staff from around the world together to share and celebrate their unique traditions, creating a rich tapestry of global culture on campus.

Showcasing culture

This year’s events boasted over 100 participants and 37 stalls, each representing a different country. These colourful displays were adorned with traditional decorations and showcased the heart of each nation through music, delicious traditional foods and a welcoming atmosphere. Attendees of the event had the chance to travel around the world in just a couple of hours, experiencing the flavours, sounds, and customs from across the globe.

One of the key features of the event was Entertainment Hour. During this time, students took to the stage to share their country’s culture through song and dance. These performances captivated the audience, reflecting the pride and passion that students have for their heritage.

Honouring heritage and building connections

International Day is a testament to the sense of unity and mutual respect that defines the SETU community. Students and staff came together not only to showcase their own cultures, but also to celebrate and support one another’s traditions.

Helen Wheeler, SETU International Mobilities Coordinator commented, “It's lovely to see the students working together to promote their countries and their heritage. A huge amount of work went into all the preparation by the students, and in many cases, their families too. The event celebrates our diverse student body and opens our minds to different cuisine, dance, and music. It also serves to put many different destinations on the holiday wish-list. Well done to all!”

"International Day was a spectacular celebration where our international students came together to set up stands that highlighted the incredible food, vibrant traditions, and unique cultures of their countries. It was a day of unity, diversity and pride, celebrating what makes each of us truly special".

Hannah Murphy, International Officer

The overwhelming success of International Day each year emphasises the importance of fostering inclusivity and diversity on campus. It was a true celebration which left everyone inspired and looking forward to next year’s festivities.

The International Office would like to extend thanks to all students and staff that made International Day such a success. Special thanks to Oran Byrne Phelan, International Office Intern for all his help in organising this event.
