SETU hosted its Global Student Orientation at its campuses in Carlow, Waterford, and Wexford on 5, 6, and 9 September.

Over 700 international students from over 60 countries were given a warm welcome to the University’s campuses during a fun-filled Orientation Programme that provided them with all the information and support needed as they embark on their studies at SETU.

A jam-packed welcome

During the three-day Global Orientation Programme, students were given tours of SETU’s campuses where they will attend lectures, laboratory practicals, and tutorials. They heard from academic staff and student ambassadors about student life at SETU; plus, they enjoyed fun-filled events where they had the opportunity to make new friends from amongst their global classmates.

Introduction to SETU facilities

At SETU’s Kilkenny Road campus in Carlow, students attended the University’s Barrow Centre where SETU’s various departments, including Sport, Computing Services, the Library team, and Students’ Union met with attendees to fill them in on all the supports available to them as SETU students.

A glimpse into Irish Culture

In addition to this, an entertaining talk on Irish Culture was delivered to help students navigate the once-in-a-lifetime experience of living in the sunny southeast, and to become accustomed to the unique sense of humour of Irish people. To top it off, students took part in Irish dancing lessons, getting first-hand experience of their host country’s traditional dance.

On day-three of orientation, students enjoyed an introduction to GAA by the Sports department in Carlow, who demonstrated Ireland’s national sports at the University’s top-class facilities.

At SETU’s campus in Waterford, a Virtual Orientation event was delivered during which students were introduced to the team at the SETU Global Office. After this, they were introduced to the Students Union and other student services such as medical care and student counselling, computer services and clubs and societies.

Embarking on an enriching experience

Welcoming the students, Dr Patricia Mulcahy, Vice President for Global Partnerships, said, “We are delighted that you have chosen SETU as the place to continue your academic journey. Each of you has made the exciting decision to study abroad, an experience that will be unforgettable.  It is one that will greatly enhance your career prospects and personal development as you study and socialise within a diverse, multicultural community."

She continued, “As international students, you bring unique perspectives and experiences that will greatly enrich our community. We encourage you to share your culture, ideas, and viewpoints, and to take full advantage of the opportunities to connect with your peers, faculty, and the broader community. Colleagues across our international offices, student services, and faculties are here to support you every step of the way. We are excited to have you with us and look forward to seeing all that you will achieve during your time at SETU.”

Campus tours

The next day, students were welcomed to the University’s Cork Road campus’ Sports Hall where Student Ambassadors kicked off campus tours, familiarising new students with the various buildings and facilities available to them at SETU. This was followed by a talk from representatives of MABs on financial advice, and from An Garda Siochana on personal safety. The students then enjoyed a talk on Irish Culture followed by a Speed Friending session hosted by the Students Union.
