The ‘Dive In: Irish Girl Guides (IGG) Membership, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, (MEDI) and Belonging Conference 2024’ was held at SETU’s Kilkenny Road Campus in Carlow on 7 September.
Raising Awareness
Organised by the IGG’s MEDI Committee, the event’s aim was to raise awareness and spread knowledge among IGG members on topics such as autism awareness, LGBTQIA+ rights, and accessibility of activities and events.
Leaders aged 18+, and Senior Branch members, aged 14 to 30, gathered to ask questions, build competencies, and share best practice to make their volunteering in the organisation as fruitful as possible.
Guest speakers
The conference also featured workshops from Family Carers Ireland, the Irish Wheelchair Association, and the Transgender Equality Network Ireland [TENI]. A panel discussion featuring guest speakers with experience in the field also took place.
Commenting on the conference, MEDI Chair, Amy McAuley, said, “The MEDI Committee is responsible for membership, equity, diversity, and inclusion in the Irish Girl Guides and we wanted to organise something for our volunteers to ensure they feel well equipped to cater to our young people when running meetings, activities, and days out. I am hoping this day will be really beneficial to the organisation and I thank SETU for all of their help, from providing the venue to arranging the catering for the event.”
