The contest, which is part of the broader University of Sanctuary initiative, not only showcased the artistic talents of these young students but served as a powerful platform for them to express their understanding of diversity in their community. The artwork brought to life the children’s vision of a society united, regardless of race, colour, or cultural background.
John Balfe, event organiser and lecturer in humanities at SETU, commented on the importance of the competition, “In times of growing division in our society, it is essential that our communities, especially educational institutions, stand as beacons of hope that educate and lead by example in the fight against racism and discrimination. This event is a crucial educational tool that sparks conversation among students, teachers, and parents on the value of diversity.”
John continued, “The initiative aligns with the broader goals of SETU’s University of Sanctuary committee that is dedicated to fostering an environment of acceptance and understanding across our campuses. It is also fitting that it coincides with the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which resonates strongly with the diverse staff and student body of SETU. Events such as ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ underline the university’s commitment to addressing societal issues in relation to equality, diversity, and inclusion, and pave the way for ongoing dialogue on these issues at SETU, and in the wider community of the south east.”
The event is just one of many steps SETU is taking towards building a more inclusive and understanding community, reaffirming the belief that education can be a powerful tool in the fight against oppression and discrimination.
