Peter Mulvihill, graduate of SETU’s MA in Advanced Facilitation Skills for Health and Well-Being, returned to third level education to bring new skills to his role as an environmental, health and safety manager for a construction company.
Previous experience
Peter began his career working in the healthcare industry. “In my thirties, I decided to pursue further education and so completed two undergraduate degrees. I then began working in the construction industry, where my focus became promoting health, safety, and well-being for workers, while minimising risks,” Peter recalled.
Combine knowledge with experience
“As I progressed in my career, I began to look for opportunities to continue my education at a higher level. I wanted to combine my health and safety knowledge with my experience in healthcare, and the MA in Advanced Facilitation Skills for Health and Well-Being offered the perfect opportunity to do just that,” Peter commented.
Prioritising well-being
Peter discussed his motivation for studying the programme, explaining: “Men make up the largest percentage of workers in the construction industry, and there is an ongoing effort to create a well-being environment that supports their mental, physical, and emotional health.
“This programme was an opportunity for me to become actively involved in these efforts and contribute to developing an environment that truly supports the well-being of workers.”
Impact on career
“This course has had a profound impact on my career” Peter continued. “It has broadened my understanding of health and safety beyond the technical aspects, expanding my focus to include the psychological and emotional well-being of workers.”
Confidence
Peter now has the tools to promote resilience and mental health in his workplace. “Studying this course has helped me gain the confidence and skills to step up and take a more holistic approach to the challenges he faces working in the construction industry” Peter reflected.
Learning experience
The blended delivery of the course favoured Peter: “The off campus setting fostered a more intimate learning environment, and the team delivering the course excelled in creating this atmosphere. Their approach helped make the experience feel personalised and supportive, allowing for deeper engagement and meaningful interactions.”
Advice to those considering the programme
Peter encouraged: “Approach the programme with an open mind and a willingness to reflect. The tools you’ll gain will not only enhance your career but will also have a lasting impact on your personal life. This will help you to become more resilient and better able to handle life’s challenges, but only if you embrace the opportunity.”
