A South East Technological University (SETU) second-year student of BSc in Horticulture is set to represent Ireland in the grand final of the Young Horticulturist of the Year Competition.

Chloe Callanan, a third-year Teagasc/SETU student based at the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin is ready to represent Ireland at the grand final at Hestercombe House and Gardens in the UK on Thursday, 9 May.

The Ireland Final of YHOY 2024 was held on Thursday, 14 March. Eight young horticulturists from across Ireland battled it out to represent their country in a grand final. They fought through a 10-round live quiz, which included a mixture of buzzer and directed rounds, combined with plant id and pest, weed and disease identification rounds.

The winner on the day was Chloe Callanan, followed closely in second place by Jonathan Molloy, a fellow Glasnevin student, who performed brilliantly in his first YHOY final.

“All of our contestants did themselves proud, displaying great horticultural knowledge throughout, especially during the identification rounds.

“The calibre of this year’s entrants has been so high, I am looking forward to what I know will be an exciting battle for the winning place at the Grand Final,” said Victoria George, National Organiser.

Dr Cara Daly, the programme director for the SETU BSc in Horticulture programmes remarked how the SETU students have a history of performing well in the Young Horticulturist of the Year Competition and wished Chloe the best of luck from all of us in the SETU School of Science and Computing.
