SETU student, Emer Lyons, a third-year student on the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Professional Social Care Practice, has been awarded first place in the “Best 3rd Year Placement” category as part of the Children’s Residential Services Awareness Week 2024.

The award ceremony took place on 23 September at the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) in Athlone, during an event celebrating the exceptional work done by social care workers across Ireland.

Outstanding relationship-building, care, and empathy

John Balfe, Emer’s supervising lecturer during her placement at Daffodil Residential Care Services in Wexford, nominated her for this national recognition based on his observation and assessment of Emer's placement.

On his reaction to Emer's award John Balfe stated that, "Throughout her placement, Emer worked in a residential house with children placed in state care by Tusla where she demonstrated outstanding relationship-building skills with young people in difficult circumstances. What stood out most was her ability to maintain professional boundaries while offering effective care and empathy, a hallmark of successful social care practice."

Self-awareness and reflection in professional development

John continued, “Emer’s adaptability and self-awareness were key to her success. She continuously reflected on her practice, adapting her interventions to meet the needs of the children in her care. This ability to reflect and learn from her experience is a crucial component of professional development in social care and highlighted her potential for a successful future in the field. Congratulations, Emer, on this well-deserved recognition of your hard work and professional skills."

Social care at SETU

This recognition of Emer’s work, who is currently completing her fourth year in Professional Social Care, is not only a testament to her dedication but also indicative of the high standards and quality of the Social Care programme at SETU. We are extremely proud of her achievement and look forward to seeing her continued success in the profession.
