Five SETU undergraduate students recently participated in the inaugural Irish Sport and Exercise Science Association (ISESA) poster presentation and networking event at UL.
The event, which took place on Thursday, 23 May, brought together final-year undergraduate students, industry leaders, speakers, and panellists to celebrate third-level achievements in exercise science. Founded in 2023, the ISESA is a representative body for students and professionals working in sector across Ireland.
Of the 50 final-year students in attendance, five were from SETU. These included BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science students Oisín Griffin, Adam Lyons, Sean Slattery, and Cathy Fogarty, along with Emily Bateman who has just completed a BSc (Hons) in Nutrition and Exercise Science.
Networking
For many, this was their first time networking with fellow sport and exercise science students from other universities. This opportunity provided a segue for the main event – the poster presentation session. Here, students were provided with the opportunity to showcase their research.
Sport and exercise science student Sean Slattery said was delighted with the overall experience, emphasising the importance of learning from other like-minded students in the field. Meanwhile, nutrition and exercise science student Emily Bateman felt reassured by the keynote speakers who said that you do not need every aspect of your life figured out so early into your career.
Pride
Speaking after the event, SETU lecturer in sport and exercise science, Annalouise Muldoon, emphasised her pride in the achievements of all the students present. “The quality of their work, and the work of all the other students present, was of such a high standard,” she said, “They should all be proud of their achievements and confident as they take the next step in their careers.”
Success
The event’s success has also encouraged the IAEA to host more of its kind in the future. A spokesperson for ISESA said, “The event marks a significant milestone for ISESA, highlighting the importance of face-to-face interactions in fostering professional growth and community building. We look forward to organising more such events in the future and continuing to support the development of our students and the broader sports and exercise sciences community.”
