A challenge of skill and strategy

Organised annually by the CIOB, the Student Challenge tests students on their technical, analytical, and teamwork abilities through a complex construction project brief. The SETU team was tasked with developing a bid proposal and presentation, demonstrating their understanding of construction management principles in a high-pressure environment.

Despite being the first team to present and even facing an unexpected 30-minute delay, the students delivered a confident and well-structured pitch in front of industry professionals, judges, and fellow competitors. Their ability to respond to challenging questions from the panel of five judges highlighted both their depth of knowledge and adaptability.

Preparation pays off

The students were supported in their preparations by lecturers Fiona Dawson and Anthony Dempsey, whose guidance helped them refine their approach to the brief.

The students worked very well as a team, being landed into a room where they were competing against other universities, having to rely on their academic knowledge and experience. The project brief they were given was challenging and it was a good test of their ability to work together in a high-pressure environment. We are delighted that they were rewarded on the day.”

Anthony Dempsey, SETU lecturer, praised the resilience and teamwork of SETU students.

A valuable experience

This achievement not only recognises the students’ hard work but also provides them with invaluable industry experience. Competing at such a high level will undoubtedly benefit them in their future studies and careers, adding a standout accomplishment to their CVs.

SETU congratulates Tomás, Aaron, Owen and Leon on their fantastic achievement and looks forward to seeing their continued success in the construction industry.
