SETU launched the delivery of its Certificate in Applied Skills Development at its Carlow campus. The one year, level 6 course is already on offer at the University’s campus in Waterford with applications now open for prospective students to enroll across both campuses in the coming year.

The Certificate in Applied Skills Development is designed for people with intellectual disabilities to experience university life in a similar way to their siblings and peers. The programme is delivered at a pace of learning designed to enable learners to build a skillset that equips them to live an enhanced life. A strong emphasis is placed on creating greater independence for learners through on-site delivery and specialised modules.

Dr Catherine Kelly Mason, Lecturer in the Department of Nursing and Healthcare at SETU, opened the event and extended a warm welcome to all potential learners. Catherine said, “This programme represents an incredible opportunity for students to develop essential skills in a supportive and inclusive environment. We are committed to fostering both personal and professional growth, ensuring that every learner is empowered to reach their full potential and thrive in their future careers.”

Personal growth and development

At an information session held at the University’s Kilkenny Road Campus, lecturers described the content of the course that includes communication skills and overall physical health and wellbeing elements. Modules also include personal and professional development, and inclusive communication and placement preparation, where students are prepped for internships, work placements, and long-term career planning.

We are delighted to be commencing PATH 4 Level 6 Certificate in Applied Skills Development in SETU’s campus in Carlow this coming September 2025. As part of this initiative, we invited people with intellectual disability interested in attending university to come to our information event. We were overwhelmed with the number of people interested in this programme which identifies the need to develop alternative pathways to third level education for a more inclusive university experience for all.

The course is delivered in a flexible mode, with learners onsite two days per week. This approach allows lecturers to deliver material at a pace that benefits each student and allows the student to learn in a way that best suits their needs. Assessments are carried out through 100% continuous assessment.

Upon completion of the course, students will have enhanced employment opportunities with new found skills equipping them to create a self-determined and fulfilling life.

SETU support

Successful applicants will have the support of SETU throughout their time studying. An orientation day will allow each applicant to find their own way around campus and create their own routine throughout their time at the University. Students will have increased independence while receiving support for their specific needs.
