SETU recently hosted the Dissertation Supervision Workshop (Level 9) for the Irish Defence Forces, designed to enhance support for dual supervision in two military masters programmes: the Master of Science in Communication Technology Management and the Master of Science in Military Engineering.

The workshop, held at SETU’s Kilkenny Road Campus in Carlow, provided a platform for collaboration between military and academic supervisors to ensure high standards of guidance for postgraduate students.

Enhanced supervision for Defence Forces students

The workshop came about as part of the growing partnership between SETU and the Irish Defence Forces, aimed at facilitating officer and Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) career progression. The event brought together the expertise of the Communication Information Services (CIS) and Engineering Corps with SETU’s academic supervisors, creating a comprehensive support system for students writing their theses.

Anne Meaney, Head of Extended Campus at SETU, emphasised the practical nature of the event. She said, “It was an excellent turnout for our recent workshop at SETU on supervision for Defence Forces masters programmes. This very practical workshop brought together the key technical expertise of military supervisors with the academic knowledge of supervisors at SETU. It took into account the academic standards and supports needed by masters students in writing their theses”.

A collaborative partnership for career progression

SETU’s partnership with the Irish Defence Forces began with the Leadership Management and Defence Studies (LMDS) courses at Levels 6 and 7 in 2012. It has since expanded to include three Level 9 masters programmes and a Level 7 engineering programme for trainee technicians. This collaboration highlights the shared commitment of both institutions in advancing education and career development for Defence Forces personnel.

By combining military and academic expertise, SETU and the Defence Forces, continue to set a high standard for postgraduate education, offering well rounded supports for students navigating the challenges of dissertation writing at master’s level.
