Successes and growth

Students and faculty gathered at SETU’s Kilkenny Road Campus, Carlow to reflect on the successes and growth of the society over the past year.

Highlights of the year include the inaugural on campus Capture the Flag event, the society’s participation in Zero Days competition, and the selection of members of the society for team Ireland in the European Cyber Security Challenge (ECSC) finals.

The Capture the Flag event, set to become an annual occurrence, provided students of all abilities a platform to demonstrate their skills in cybersecurity through various challenges and tasks.

Five teams of 20 students from SETU participated in the Zero Days competition, showcasing their talents on a national stage. The students' performance was commendable, reflecting the high standards and dedication of the students and team mentors involved. One of SETU’s teams emerged victorious in both the Colleges and Open competition, representing a huge achievement for team captain Andrew Currie, and his colleagues Daniel Vetrila, Peter Hyland, and Ivan Nikolskiy.

Having had two members of team Ireland from SETU last year (Andrew Currie and Daniel Vetrila), a number of other SETU students are also now under consideration to represent Ireland in the ECSC finals, which take place in Turin, Italy from 7 to 11 October, 2024.

At the get together, Nigel Whye, the Head of the Department of Computing, presented team gear to the participating students. He congratulated them on their achievements and emphasised the importance of their contributions to the field of cybersecurity. Thanks was extended to N-TUTORR for their generous support in supplying the t-shirts, and hoodies.

Michael Gleeson, lecturer in computing and coordinator of CTF activities on the Kilkenny Road Campus, Carlow Campus, expressed his gratitude to the students for their enthusiastic participation. He outlined his hopes for the future, stating, “This year’s success sets a solid foundation for our future activities. I am confident that next year’s CtF events will be even bigger and better, building on the momentum we have created.”

With the continued support of faculty and industry partners, the society plans to build on this year’s success. The Cyber Society is already planning for the next academic year, aiming to expand its activities and engage more students in the dynamic field of cybersecurity.

The Cyber Society at SETU is focused on fostering an interest and excellence in all things cyber and computing. Through competitions, workshops, and collaborative projects, the society aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the ever-evolving field of cybersecurity and computing.
