South East Technological University (SETU) has been awarded the Smarter Travel Mark at silver level.
Silver-level award
The Smarter Travel Mark recognises and celebrates organisations that support active and sustainable travel on the commute and beyond. The silver-level award recognises both SETU’s commitment to promoting active travel by encouraging walking, cycling, and public transport use and the work undertaken by SETU’s Estates team in supporting this.
Achieving the Smarter Travel Mark demonstrates that the University prioritises the importance and value of sustainable travel initiatives and the environmental benefits that creates.
Sustainable options
According to Dr David Ryan, associate Vice President for Sustainability at SETU, “Approximately 20,000 students and staff travel to and from our campuses across the south east. Using active and sustainable commuting options can make a real difference, not only in terms of reducing carbon emissions and enhancing the campus environment but also impacts positively on health and well-being.”
To support active travel SETU has a cycle-to-work scheme, which supports employees in purchasing a bicycle and related equipment while all campuses have bicycle parking and increasingly offer bicycle rental options. SETU campuses also participate in national initiatives such as ‘Walktober’, ‘Bike week’, ‘Marchathon step challenge’, and ‘Cycle into summer’ campaigns. Full bus and rail service information for travel to all SETU campuses is available on the SETU website, and student and young adult Leap Card schemes offer a 50% reduction on public transport fares.
