Third-year SETU student Cillian Griffin from Tralee, Co Kerry is studying the BEng (Hons) in Aerospace Engineering at our Kilkenny Road Campus in Carlow. He began life at the University having been awarded SETU’s Sports Scholarship. He has been the captain of SETU’s athletics team for three years.

Unique programme

I chose to study at SETU its BEng (Hons) in Aerospace Engineering caught my attention. This unique programme focuses on an area not offered by many Irish universities. I have always had an interest in engineering and all things aviation, so I appreciate studying a course in which the lecturers share the same passion. I also love the hands-on approach to learning that comes with the programme.

Inspired by athletes

One element that sealed the deal for me was the strength of SETU’s athletics team. I saw performers like Olympian Marcus Lawlor and Irish track and field athlete Molly Scott excel in athletics at the University. This both inspired me and allowed me to realise that SETU was the right place for my sporting and academic development.

Support

Support is abundant in every direction at SETU, whether it is academics, sports, or personal health. It is a nurturing environment where growth and learning thrive. The community radiates positivity, making it an ideal place to flourish and excel in your chosen field. When I contacted the sports department, their personal touch and genuine care ensured I was heard, supported, and a part of the sporting community at SETU. With all these positive experiences, I am 100% certain that this college is where I belong.

Team spirit

Over the past three years, I have proudly served as the captain of our SETU athletics team. This leadership role has significantly enhanced my interpersonal skills. Guiding the team through various challenges, fostering camaraderie, and ensuring smooth operations during training sessions have all been invaluable experiences.

Being part of this club has exposed me to a supportive and highly motivated training community. The collective dedication and passion of my fellow athletes have pushed me in the right direction, enabling me to achieve high standards in my sport. All that hard work recently paid off when I received my first call-up to represent Ireland at senior level — a milestone I am immensely proud of.

SETU Sports Scholarship

Thanks to the SETU Sports Scholarship, I have received invaluable support. It grants me access to an elite gym and physiotherapy services resources that have been instrumental in shaping my athletic journey. The convenience of an on-campus gym and physio sessions has allowed me to seamlessly integrate my training regime with academic commitments. Be it squeezing in a workout between classes or addressing any physical needs promptly, this accessibility has made my overall experience more manageable and productive. Without these supports, I certainly would not be where I am today.
