Before starting at SETU Shauna discovered design was for her during a PLC course that made her realise she would be "happy doing design for 70 years.".

Shauna Brennan, from Carlow, is a past pupil of St Leo’s College in Carlow. She recently graduated from SETU with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Design (Visual Communications).
Falling in love with graphic design
I was studying history and politics before but I disliked it. I wanted to do something else. I liked drawing logos and lettering, drawing in general, so I did a PLC course [further education] in graphic design and found that I adored it. I applied to Design (Visual Communications) in SETU and I fell in love with it. It is one of those things that either clicks with you or doesn’t, for me it clicked. It was the first time I ever saw myself doing something, I was like ‘I could do this for the next seventy years of my life.’ I would suggest doing a PLC course, it will give you a taste for what you are going to do if you are not too sure. You do have to commit to this course because it is a lot of work. But if you like it this never feels like work.
Deciding on a university
It was handy to get to from home. SETU was one of those places I had put on my CAO form, one of those places that you would say, I would like to go there. I was here when I was 15, it was the first college that I thought I would like to be here.
Internship
Since finishing the course I have gotten an internship at DBF in Waterford. Here I do a little bit of everything because it is a print house and a design shop so on the screens I’m doing design and I also get to see a lot of my stuff being done so I get to go and see the finished pieces. It's really cool.
A positive atmosphere
All the amazing people I met. I loved being here, I felt comfortable here. It was the first time I ever walked into a class full of people and was like these are my people. That’s a really nice feeling. I used to come to college early and I wouldn’t leave till late, I always wanted to be here. Waterford became home!
