Laois native, Liam Scully, graduated with a first-class honours from SETU’s Master of Science in Medical Device Regulatory Affairs during the Autumn conferring session held at SETU’s Kilkenny Road campus in Carlow.

The Master of Science in Medical Regulatory Affairs equips graduates to meet the changing requirements of future employers, through the development of transferable skills like information technology, team working, written and verbal communication, independent research skills, critical thinking and data analysis.

Carlow roots

Upon completion of his Leaving Certificate, Liam attended higher education in the Carlow Regional Technical College (RTC) from 1986 to 1989, completing both a NCEA Certificate in Applied Physics and a Diploma in Business Studies. Liam shared “I am a county Laois man, but I have always had a great affinity with SETU since my original college days in Carlow”.

Returning to education

With a career spanning 33 years in the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI), Liam is currently working as part of the management team in Legal Metrology as Chief Inspector. His years of work experience coupled with his previous qualifications allowed him to return to education at SETU through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Speaking about his journey back to education, Liam shared “Back in 2022, I attended the SETU Open Evening in Carlow, where I met with Eoin O Brien, Manager for Lifelong Learning at SETU. We discussed the different options available for me to study a level 8 course in Business Management. He advised me to use the RPL method of entry, whereby prior college learning and years of work experience are assessed to determine entry requirements”.

Liam was accepted onto the Business Management course in September 2022, achieving his level 8 qualification with a first-class honour. Speaking about the achievement, Liam said” I felt that this would enable me to progress in my career at NSAI and in the wider public service, as most management roles now require a level 8 qualification”.

Continuing his studies

With an undergraduate qualification already under his belt, Liam chose to continue his studies in SETU, progressing onto a Master of Science in Medical Device Regulatory Affairs. Talking about the reason for his decision, he explained “During the summer of 2023, I was informed that if I wanted to, I could continue my studies in SETU. I decided to progress to the level 9 qualification, as I wanted to keep the momentum going after my undergraduate degree. I work within a regulatory environment, so the course was a perfect fit for me”.

Speaking about his time at SETU

Reflecting on his time studying at SETU, Liam stated “I am proud of my achievements over the last two years. I would like to thank SETU and specifically the staff at Lifelong Learning for the opportunity to reawaken my interest in education albeit later in life!”
