SETU's global recognition for research excellence is anchored in its robust centres of expertise, distinguished for their outstanding contributions to world-class research, where individual scholars and research teams are empowered to pursue their inquiries. The research infrastructure at SETU is structured into three distinct entities: Institutes, which represent the largest research units within SETU; Centres, serving as intermediate-sized research units; and Groups, representing smaller-scale research units.

Walton Institute
Walton is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for ICT research and innovation. We carry out a wide spectrum of industry-informed research in Information and Communications Technologies (ICT), particularly technologies enabling communications and information services.

Research Centres
Research Centres at SETU span a range of disciplines and prioritises its further development based on excellence, scale, policy relevance and opportunity. The centres are nationally recognised, highly focused research units with a focus on regional and enterprise needs.

Research groups
Research groups were established in SETU to serve emerging research strengths and allow strategic pursuit of research goals. They can be a part of a larger unit such as a centre or can exist across singular or dual faculties.
