The INSYTE-Cooley Research Lab (I-CRL) is a partnership between the Luke Wadding Library Special Collections unit and the Centre for INformation SYstems and TEchno-culture (INSYTE) Research Centre at the South East Technological University (SETU), Waterford, Ireland.

The I-CRL was founded following the donation of the personal library and personal archive of renowned scientist and engineer, Professor Michael Cooley. Dr Larry Stapleton, Director of INSYTE was instrumental in the acquisition of the Cooley Collection and worked closely with the Luke Wadding Library to provide it with a home.

The I-CRL is a multi-disciplinary lab consisting of librarians, researchers, academics and students from Humanities, Engineering, Business, Computing, Education and Industry. A number of undergraduate and post graduate students have completed final year projects within the lab and currently the lab has two PhD students.

The research is focused on the digitisation of Cultural Heritage using the Human-Centered Systems (HCS) approach. Its research includes standards for interoperability between systems and the use of open data sets and linked data on the semantic web.  The research also encompasses the use of AI on smart data and the co-evolution of a HCS framework for digitisation of cultural heritage.

The AI & Society Journal was co-founded by Professor Michael Cooley in 1983 and members of the lab consistently publish in it. Members regularly publish and present at the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) Conferences  also.
