Welcome to the INSYTE-Cooley Research Lab(I-CRL). We are an interdisciplinary lab engaged in the digitisation of the Professor Michael Cooley archive.

We follow the human centred systems ethos (valorise tacit knowledge, augment but do not replace the work of the human, socially useful production) of Professor Michael Cooley. Our members  are diverse and our lab is inclusive.

The lab has been set up as a Participation Action Research(PAR) lab for the digitisation of cultural heritage and a framework is evolving from the digitisation of the Cooley Archive.

We greatly value student engagement with us and welcome 4th year students working on their final year projects, masters students and PhD students. Every two weeks we have a “Show and Tell” in the lab meeting where all students present their progress and gain valuable feedback from the very experienced lab members. We value all our members dearly and endeavour to wrap the support of the lab around them as they progress in their individual studies.

Participatory Action Research  (PAR) lab where librarians, other disciplines and students can work together on projects.

PAR space

Location of forthnightly “Show and Tell” meetings where students present progress on their work and gain valuable feedback from very experienced lab members. These meetings are a very important facet to the PAR lab.

Lab Ideation Space

The lab space and whiteboard/projector enables the fleshing out of ideas by lab members.

The INSYTE-Cooley Research Lab is located in room LB31 in the digitisation hub located on the bottom floor of the Luke Wadding Library, SETU (Waterford). Go in the main door and take a sharp turn right down the stairs and then right again. It is located about two thirds down in the library

You can also take a preliminary trip to our lab door by using the library 3D facility (Look for Room no: LB31) here.

Testimonials

Joseph Bridges, 4th year BSc. in Creative Computing Student

During my time with the Cooley Research group, I learned a great deal about different technologies, integrating them and even the fascinating story of Mike Cooley himself. My project was based on building a website from the ground up and integrating it with a content management system, WordPress. The fortnightly meetings were especially beneficial. Being able to see and learn more about everyone's projects was a great experience. My time with the research team taught me a lot and I am thankful to everyone involved for taking the time to teach me everything about their projects and the research team for teaching us a lot about the Human Centred Systems

Adam Lowe, 4th Year BSc. in Information Systems Management student

Working with the INSYTE-Cooley Research Lab (I-CRL) has been one of the most rewarding experiences during my tenure as a student in SETU. Being able to work with the Professor Mike Cooley collection up close was an experience like no other as it gave me an indept look into the world of human-centred innovation and the great work introduced to the world by Professor Cooley. Through the kindness of the Cooley family I was able to experience all of the work created by Professor Mike Cooley and all of the notes written down from Prof. Cooley's mind giving me the opportunity to experience how he felt in that moment and the thought process he went through.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the INSYTE-Cooley Research Lab was being surrounded by the most sophisticated and knowledgeable people I've met in my life. This in turn raised my knowledge of human-centred innovation, Mets Metadata Repositories and coding languages but the most rewarding part of being a member of the research lab had to be the close relationships I developed with my fellow members and mentors which will stay with me forever. All of the work I did within the INSYTE-Cooley Research Lab definitely helped me moving forward career wise as it gave me the experience of working within a group of like-minded individuals and allowed me to showcase my own skills which only improved. I'd like to thank all of the members of  the INSYTE-Cooley Research Lab (I-CRL) for being so welcoming and helpful during my time in the research lab and I'd strongly encourage anyone to take part in this very rewarding experience.
