aRCH (architecture ResearCH)

We propose a research programme focused on expanding the potential of the university’s collaboration with local communities and on exploring possibilities for establishing new research grounds within the existing capacities of the School of Engineering and in collaboration with industry.

Brief Overview of Research Themes:

Aleksandar Kostic:

•           Theory of Design:

Investigation of the Reflective Practice in Architecture and effects on knowledge creation

The role of Research through Design and design through research in knowledge creation

•           Philosophy and Architectural Design:

The impact of the epistemological concepts on theory of Design

Developing an interface between architecture and other disciplines

Fintan Duffy:

Practice-based research (as director with dhbArchitects) over the last 6 months and ongoing:

•           Conservation  study and survey, including measured drawings and conditions reports on No.17, St Stephen’s Green North, a Protected Structure of national importance, containing               historic decorative plasterwork by renowned Georgian stuccadore Michael Stapleton.

•           Conservation study and survey, and then adaptation and refurbishment as offices of No 30 O’Connell St Waterford, a protected structure and early concrete building, as the new                   headquarters of the Southern Regional Assembly.

Jane Russell-O’Connor:

•           Multi and interdisciplinary research  (landscape history/ecology – cultural/natural) related to landscape evaluation, classification and charactersiation

•           Reconstructing historic landscapes in landed estates

•           Ecological and historical hedgerow evaluation

•           Complexities and conflicts realized to promote sustainable landscapes

•           Methodologies for Spatial Analysis and Evaluation of Multiple Cultural Landscapes in River Valley Landscape Typologies in Ireland.

•           Comparative Analysis of National and International Landscape Spatial Practices & Models for Landscape Character Assessment.

Challenges Addressed:

•           Developing new methodologies for the spatial assessing and representation of multiple cultural landscapes within a defined landscape area for inclusion as assessment criteria in the National Landscape Strategy’s Landscape Character Assessment Model.

•           Defining the value of landscape spatial research for informing decision-making and built environment design at local, regional and national level.
