Research data management (RDM) encompasses the practices involved in collecting, maintaining, utilising, preserving, and sharing data that underpin your research. Key aspects of RDM include:
- Storing and backing up your data effectively to safeguard against corruption and loss.
- Organizing your data with meaningful file names, logical folder structures, and applying version control to track changes in modified files.
- Implementing quality controls throughout your data workflow to maintain data integrity and minimize errors and their impact.
- Documenting your data thoroughly so that you and others can understand what the data represent, how they were collected or generated, and the processes used for analysis.
- Managing personal and confidential data to comply with the Data Protection Act and fulfill ethical obligations.
- Preserving and sharing your data in a way that allows other researchers to access and reuse them, typically through appropriate data repositories
