Biography

 

Dr Emily Lockwood is a lecturer in general and advanced nursing practice at the South East Technological University SETU Ireland.

Dr Lockwood holds over 30 years of experience in clinical nursing, nursing management, advanced nursing practice, education, project management and research, with a PhD by research which explored Self Determination Theory (mixed methods) to examine the impact of Advanced Nursing Practice Clinical Autonomy. 

Dr Lockwood holds MScs in advanced nursing practice program, MSc in nursing science, BSc in Nursing Science & HDip General Nursing. Dr Lockwood completed her PG teaching and learning certificate in higher education. Advocate for Universal Design for Learning. Supervised MSc and PhD and external PhD Viva supervisor.  To scaffold her PhD supervision, she has completed PhD supervision workshops in Australia in 2023 and last year completed a three-day PhD workshop facilitated by Excello coaching (Professor Savage).

Dr Lockwood has recently collaborated with an Erasmus plus collaboration with Professor Fagerstrom in Abo University, Vassa, FInaland and is visiting the university this year to strengthen the EU ANP implementation. Ireland being the only EU country to have successfully credentialised ANP with the Nursing and Midwifery board of Nursing. She previously collaborated with a PG Erasmus exchange fro Finland when ANP students came to Ireland and worked with ANPs all over Ireland in acute and primary care. 

Invited conference keynote speaker - advanced Nursing Practice - self-determination theory, psychological factors of autonomy, and implementing the impact of APN in clinical practice -  In her keynote speaking capacity has spoken for the International Council of Nursing APN network in Dublin and invited speaker for APN Networks in Hamburg Germany, United Kingdom, Berlin Germany, Norway, Finland and China. 

Awarded the ‘Sigma European research price winner 2024’ final psychometric testing impact APN scale (ANPCAIS) and thematic analysis work. 

Emily was the first advanced nurse practitioner in acute and primary care outside of Dublin in all of Ireland since 2004. She is a Certified NMBI board registered advanced nurse practitioner in paediatric and adult emergency nursing, a registered nurse prescriber of medications & ionising & radiation & is a registered general Nurse. Dr Lockwood is an invited Member of the International Council of Nurses APN Alumni and a Sigma chapter member.

Emily's research - self-determination theory is a macro theory, people actively strive for organic growth. To develop a cohesive sense of self, people need to gain mastery (gender needs to be considered) and autonomous motivation, (intrinsic motivation) to improve well-being and organisational productivity in all aspects of an individual's life

Dr Lockwood completed her PG teaching and learning certificate in higher education in 2024. Some of the modules she currently lectures are: Evidence-based practice for nursing, Module Lead evidence-based practice for nursing (year 1), medication management, advanced nursing practice, nurse prescribing, OSCE advanced physical assessor, emergency nursing.

Dr Emily Lockwood is an invited alumni member of the International Council of Nursing APN Network 

Dr Lockwood was the previous vice chair of the Irish Association of Advanced Nurse and Midwife Practitioners (IAANMP), secretary, treasurer and is the IAANMP committee research advisor.

Dr Lockwood is a member of the Sigma Honor society of Nursing (Omega Epsilon Chapter)
